The Edmonton Oilers beat the LA Kings in 6 games despite having the lowest share of powerplay time in the NHL playoffs, and now they'll face the NHL's darling Vegas.
Vegas Golden Knights have highest share of powerplay time, least penalized team in NHL this season
Aside from the Los Angeles Kings, the Golden Knights have had the highest share of powerplay time so far this playoffs.
It's hard to square, given that Vegas doesn't exactly have the reputation of playing a clean game. Plenty of their core players are experts at getting in an extra jab that somehow goes uncalled, led by captain
Mark Stone.
Despite their reputation for being a chippy team, the Vegas Golden Knights have the most powerplay time this playoffs and set a record this season for least penalties in NHL history.
Led by former Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy, Vegas has perfected the ability to get in a few extra jabs in the late stages of a game, between whistles, and any other time that go uncalled.
It will be key in this series for the Oilers to keep their heads, stay disciplined, and try to win their share of the special teams battle. The Oilers powerplay is key to their success and needs its opportunities to get hot, and the penalty kill needs to be stellar in front of
Calvin Pickard.
We'll have to see if the trend of Vegas' anomalous penalty differential continues, but the Oilers should expect to have a questionably officiated series.
