Edmonton Oilers set to release Connor Brown, Corey Perry to free agency
According to reports from TSN insider Ryan Rishaug today, both veteran forwards are set to hit the free agent market seeking raises that aren't available from the Oilers.
The team still seems open to Corey Perry returning, but are just unwilling to pay him the amount other teams are offering him in free agency.
The Oilers could explore contract bonuses to reduce the AAV, but they'd still have to pay them the season after. Frankly, the ball is in Perry's court - return to Edmonton on a discount, or leave for more in free agency.
Insider Jeff Marek has reported that
the Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars both have interest in signing Perry if he makes it to market - and will offer the $2.5M he's looking for.
It's tough to see both Brown and Perry leave after both played such key roles in the Oilers' last two playoff runs. But, these two are aging players looking to cash out at the end of their careers, and the Oilers have to manage their cap ruthlessly in pursuit of a Cup.
Letting both walk may be the right call.
