The Anaheim Ducks have signed their third NHL goaltender to their roster, giving Ville Husso a 2 year deal for $4.4M total - and opened the door to another goalie trade.
Anaheim Ducks sigh Ville Husso to $4.4M deal, adding to surplus of goalies
According to reports from NHL insiders today, the Anaheim Ducks are re-signing Ville Husso to a two-year contract with a $2.2M AAV.
Husso is a 30 year old Finnish goaltender who's only played 4 games with the Ducks since being acquired at the trade deadline for future considerations.
He's played minimal games in the Ducks organization, and found himself toiling in the AHL for much of the last two seasons.
However, Husso was considered one of the more promising goalies just a few years ago. Between 2021 and 2023, Husso started 96 games for the Blues and Red Wings, posting a career high of a .919 save percentage in 40 games.
Anaheim Ducks likely to trade one of three goalies after Husso signing
It's curious the Ducks have chosen to retain Husso on such a large contract for a backup goalie - especially considering the fact they just acquired one.
The Ducks now have
Lukas Dostal as their future and current starter, veteran journeyman
Petr Mrazek, and Ville Husso locked up to sizeable contracts. There's never enough ice for 3 NHL goalie, so it's likely they move at least one of them. Most likely, it's the veteran Mrazek.
Unfortunately, Mrazek and Husso both don't seem like the reliable proven starters the Oilers are looking for. Edmonton may have to get creative in their search for a goalie, and pass on the obvious candidates like Mrazek.
