Edmonton Oilers fire former player from organization after just one season
The Edmonton Oilers have reportedly parted ways with former player Zack Kassian, who was hired by the organization just last offseason.
Edmonton Oilers part ways with Zack Kassian as pro scout after one season
According to Tom Gazzola of the Hello Hockey Show and Edmonton Sports Talk, the Oilers have relieved Kassian of his duties this offseason.
It's obviously not a good sign that Kassian's departing after just one year. They're clearly not happy with his work evaluating NHL and AHL players, but there also could be another factor to it.
Mark Spector has reported that some more organizational changes will be announced next week, as GM Stan Bowman looks to put his stamp on the organization. There's expected to be changes with the coaching staff, and Bowman could bring in some of his own scouts as well.
Kassian is just 34 years old, and retired after playing 8 games in the Czech league during the 2023-24 season.
He joined the Edmonton Oilers in the 2015-16 season, the first year of
Connor McDavid in the NHL. He became a fan favourite for his rugged style of play, being the enforcer protecting a young McDavid, and even once putting up 34 points in 59 games. By the end of his time with Edmonton in 2022, he was just a 4th liner.
Kassian got a warm reception from Oilers fans while in attendance for a playoff game, and he'll always have fans in Edmonton.
We wish all the best for Kassian in his next chapter, and hope he can continue to work in hockey if he wishes.
