The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly re-signing forward Kasperi Kapanen to a one year contract for just $1.3M, as he was set to become a free agent tomorrow.
The Oilers were rumoured to be most interested in re-signing Kapanen and Trent Frederic first on forward, as the team looks to get younger and faster in their bottom six. Kasperi Kapanen absolutely helps on both fronts.
Edmonton Oilers re-sign Kasperi Kapanen to great value contract
According to PuckPedia, the Oilers have officially registered Kapanen's contract next season at a value of $1.3M.
With the salary cap rising by more than $7M this offseason, paying Kapanen a small raise past $1M is practically a negligible increase from his last contract.
And Kapanen provided some great value to the Oilers last season on his deal. The Oilers claimed him off waivers from the St. Louis Blues on November 19th of last year, and he was immediately able to step into the lineup.
Able to play in the top six alongside Leon Draisaitl or down on the fourth line, Kapanen brings speed and tenacity anywhere in the lineup, and can be an asset for the penalty kill. His tenacity can turn into recklessness sometimes, but he can still be a positive contributor. In 12 playoff games last year, Kapanen scored 6 points.
In addition, the Oilers have signed forward Noah Philp, who will also act as a depth center on next year's team - with a chance to take the 4th line center job.
