The Edmonton Oilers had a historic moment today with signing Connor McDavid, and now details are emerging about the contract talks.
McDavid signed for an unprecedented discount for an athlete at their peak at only $12.5M. It's on of the most interesting contracts in all of sports, and it came to fruition over just a few days.
NHL insider reveals exactly how McDavid negotiations occurred
The main holdup for McDavid that prevented a deal being reached through the offseason and preseason was intense discussions about the future of the Oilers roster.
McDavid and the organization spoke at length about the need to aggressively pursue a Stanley Cup with an aging roster. Through it all, McDavid was always committed to staying in Edmonton.
According to TSN insider Ryan Rishaug, McDavid settled on his expected terms just a few days ago, and took a few more days to reflect. McDavid presented his terms for the first time this morning, and the deal was complete within minutes.
The Oilers were always going to be happy to meet any of McDavid's demands, but when he presented a number below Leon Draisaitl's salary, Stan Bowman's jaw might have dropped.

Although it took longer than was comfortable for Oilers fans, in the end the front office handled the negotiation extremely well.
