The NHL waiver wire is packed today as teams finalize their NHL rosters before opening night, and there's a few notes of interest for the Oilers.
Edmonton was expected to need to send down a few players to get under the roster maximum of 23 players. For now they're only sending down one player, but they'll have another move coming.
Edmonton Oilers place forward on waivers, top goalie target becomes available
According to NHL insiders, the Oilers have only placed forward
Max Jones on waivers. As a 4th line fringe winger, he's expected to clear.
DiPietro is a 26 year old goaltender who's been one of the best AHL goalies in recent years. Signed to a league minimum contract for the next 2 seasons, he was linked to the Oilers as a potential upgrade on the backup position.
The Oilers have now traded for
Connor Ingram who will begin the season in the AHL, so the door's not closed on the Oilers claiming DiPietro. If they believe the cheap young goalie has a future with the team, claiming him would be a good move - if he falls to Edmonton late in the waiver order.
Edmonton Oilers will have another roster move coming after waiving Max Jones
Currently, the Oilers are still over the 23 man roster limit. That's including injured players like
Jake Walman,
Zach Hyman, and Mattias Janmark on the roster.
According to Oilers insiders, Edmonton will have to send another 2 players down before the season, or make another roster move like a trade or place a player on injured reserve.
The Oilers are right against the salary cap and roster limits already, so making a claim in waivers would be tough. But if management clearly believes in a player, they'll make a move.
