Connor McDavid is officially re-signing with the Edmonton Oilers, but he's also staying at a frankly ridiculous discount.
Multiple NHL insiders have now confirmed the new contract with McDavid, and the Captain had a brief message to the fans himself. However, the terms of the contract are just now being revealed, and they're shocking.

According to Elliotte Friedman, Connor McDavid will be paid only $12.5M on a two year contract - that's even less than Leon Draisaitl.
Connor McDavid is unanimously considered the best player in the NHL, and any team including the Oilers would've paid the maximum salary of $19.1M to keep him.
Instead, he refused the highest salary again to help the team build a complete roster.

NHL insiders had reported that McDavid would take a discount in the offseason, but no one believed it could be as low as $12.5M. It's really a discount of nearly $7M from McDavid. According to PuckPedia, he'll now be only the 5th highest paid player in the NHL.
The contract will only be for 2 seasons, but that's still an incredible gift from McDavid to the Oilers, especially with the rising salary cap.
Considering his message to fans, this incredible salary discount, and his deviation to this team - it's clear that McDavid is desperate to win with the Oilers, just as he said all along.
Management will now need to be ultra-aggressive to pursue every possible addition to make the most of McDavid's discount, and deliver a Stanley Cup to Edmonton within 2 years.
