NHL Player Safety will have no suspension for Radko Gudas
NHL Player Safety submits their decisions for supplemental discipline before 5PM EST, and with no decision announced, it seems like Gudas got off Scott-free. The Ducks play tomorrow night as well, so any suspension would've been expedited.
Several Oilers reporters had advocated for Gudas being suspended for the play, considering the egregious and unnecessary contact to the head.
Corey Perry was in a vulnerable position looking backward and not even in possession of the puck when Gudas popped him in the head.
Very deliberately, Gudas popped out his shoulder to make high contact with Corey Perry, sending the veteran off the ice momentarily to be checked out.
It was a high hit, interference, and clearly had intent to injure Perry. These are the exact plays the NHL claims to want to get out of hockey, but then they don't call their rule book consistently.
A one game suspension, or even a fine would've been a fitting discipline for Gudas. Shockingly, the hit wasn't even called a minor penalty.
George Parros and
NHL Player Safety are already taking some significant heat for their lack of discipline on Gudas.
When there's a very close play such as this, the NHL should at least release an explanation as to their decision not to pursue discipline. Fans deserve to know more about these decisions, and not be so confused at their outcome so frequently.
