Suspension calls for Gudas cheap shot on Corey Perry, referees lose control of Oilers vs Ducks
Ducks veteran defenceman Radko Gudas threw a brutal chicken wing elbow at Corey Perry, and the referees missing an obvious penalty led to more chaos for the Oilers.
Corey Perry takes ridiculous elbow to the head and referees lose control
Midway through the second period, the most egregious offence of the night came from Radko Gudas delivering a cheap shot elbow to the head, forcing Corey Perry down the tunnel.
Perry couldn't even play the puck behind the referee, but while his head was down and skating by to try to retrieve the puck, Gudas stuck out his elbow for a brutal, hard head contact against Perry.
Oilers insiders like David Staples are calling for a suspension for Gudas on the play, which should draw some attention from
NHL Player Safety.
It was a ridiculous missed call by the officials. One referee was caught obstructing the play from Perry, but other officials must've had their eyes on the play. Gudas' elbow wasn't exactly subtle, so it's unbelievable a crew of referees missed it.
Referees missed call sends Oilers and Ducks game into chaos
Thankfully Corey Perry was able to come back to this game healthy, and the Oilers were able to avoid even more injuries in this garbage time game.
However, the referees missing egregious calls like this just creates more chaos. All throughout the game,
the Ducks were hunting dirty plays and the referees missed far too many. Oilers broadcaster Louie DeBrusk was ticked.
That's not a penalty either. Great job guys! Once again, loving your calls tonight. You're doing a terrific job.
- Louie DeBrusk
The Oilers may not have been expecting such a gritty game against a rebuilding team at this time of year, and their team is hurting already with so many injuries, but they needed to have more of a response.
Corey Perry is 39 years old and is the player who always sticks up for his teammates physically. He was able to come back to the game and seek out Gudas himself, but other teammates should be stepping up too.
The Oilers too often just allow offences to happen to them, trying to draw a penalty, and then get caught up in meaningless scrums after the whistle. They should have a more proactive approach to intimidate during play.
Aside from the Oilers response though, the chaos of last night falls entirely on the referees. If Gudas is properly called on his penalty against Perry, the temperature of the game dials back, and it doesn't become a bush league late season game.
