NHL insiders are reporting that the Edmonton Oilers are strong contenders to land Jordan Binnington and a defenceman from the St. Louis Blues in trade.
The Oilers seem to be finally kicking off a goaltending search as their tandem ranks near last in the NHL. The team needs a proven goaltender entering a must-win playoffs, and Binnington has that experience.
NHL insider reveals Oilers linked to blockbuster trade with St. Louis Blues
Binnington has one more season on his contract and the sense is he won't be part of any re-tool the Blues might undergo. The strongest speculation ties Binnington to Edmonton, and that the Oilers are also seeing if they can get a defenceman out of St. Louis at the same time. That potential deal would most likely be built around Stuart Skinner going back to St. Louis to team up with Hofer.

Owed $6M on his contract, the Oilers would likely have to move out more salary than just Stuart Skinner. Very few other players don't have trade protection, so their other options would be Kulak and Janmark. Clearly, the Blues would want more pieces in return.
Because the Oilers are so desperate for a proven goaltender, it makes sense they'd be connected to Binnington with his playoff experience and Team Canada pedigree. However, there's some real concerns about his play this season.
Binnington currently has an .880 save percentage in 15 games, and ranks last in the NHL for Goals Saved Above Expected. Sure he's got playoff experience, but it's a big bet that he'd be able to dial up his play consistently from his current level.
Considering the salary cost and trade price for Binnington, the Oilers may be better off without other solutions.
