2 former Oilers making NHL comeback attempts get big updates on their future

Lucic signed a professional tryout contract with the St. Louis Blues this season, and after not making the team to start the year, was signed to an AHL contract for more time. Travis Dermott had not signed any contract in the offseason.

At 37 years old and after missing the last 2 full seasons, an NHL comeback was extremely unlikely for Lucic. Considering his declining speed, it was frankly a shock any team gave him the chance.

The Blues announced today that Lucic has been released by their AHL squad after 5 games. He scored just 1 point, and had a -7 rating.

Travis Dermott played 19 NHL games last season between the Oilers and Minnesota Wild, and has a much better chance at an NHL comeback at 28 years old.

According to a report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Dermott has been recovering from a shoulder surgery and is now ramping up skating to resume his career.

He's likely not a fit for the Oilers, and depth defenceman have had a tough market this year in the NHL. His experience and youth should net him a new opportunity, but he'll likely have to start in the AHL to work his way back.

Friedman also revealed that forward Robby Fabbri is also attempting an NHL comeback, and may even be close to signing with a new team.

We'll see if any of these players is successfully able to break back into the NHL. For now, it seems like Lucic's attempt may have hit its last bump.
