The Edmonton Oilers traded down 2 spots at the 2021 NHL draft, and it looks like it may have cost them a franchise goalie in Jesper Wallstedt.
Oilers fans have been bringing up the decision to pass on Wallstedt in recent weeks as the 23 year old Wild goalie had a strong start to the season. Now after 8 games with a .935 save percentage and 3 shutouts, he looks like a star.
2021 draft trade deemed a disaster by Oilers analysts
As Wallstedt continues to dominate with every opportunity and the Oilers are still struggling with their crease, this trade is already looking like a major loss for Edmonton. If Wallstedt goes on to have a long career, this will be remembered for a long time.
In 2021 the Oilers traded down two selections in the draft, giving up the pick to select Wallstedt and instead Edmonton drafted
Xavier Bourgault and
Luca Munzenberger.
Munzenberger is now out of the organization and playing overseas, while Bourgault was traded to the Ottawa Senators where he remains in the AHL.
What stings the most about this pick is that Edmonton fans were screaming for the team to draft the highest rated goalie, which was still a position of need at the time.
Unfortunately, Ken Holland and Tyler Wright didn't see what everyone else did. Now Wallstedt is breaking records in his first full rookie season.
Edmonton will still need to find a solution for their goaltending before entering another playoff run. If they had Wallstedt, they'd have a cheaper goalie than Skinner performing at a much higher clip.
