Edmonton Oilers prospect Ike Howard is tearing up the AHL since being demoted by the Oilers earlier this month.
The Oilers acquired Howard in trade hopeful that he could make an impact in the NHL this season. He does appear to need more time developing in the AHL, and now it's on him to make the best of his chances. So far, the Oilers are seeing positive signs.
Edmonton Oilers prospect Ike Howard dominating AHL since his assignment
Since joining the Bakersfield Condors, Howard has been the best player on the ice every night. Now in his first 4 games, he's got 2 goals and 7 points.
It's an extremely positive sign to see for Howard, not just for his play but for his character.
Howard reportedly was looking for a trade out of Tampa due to not getting an NHL opportunity this season. Coach Knoblauch barely played Howard in 17 games, too. He's got a big personality, and there were some concerns from fans about how he'd handle the demotion.
Instead of complaining about the roster move, it's incredible to see Howard put his head down and dominate the lower competition. With increased minutes in the AHL, he's been able to show off more elements of his game, most notably his playmaking.
If he continues this offence and rounds out his 200-foot game in the AHL, he'll be grabbing the attention of Oilers management again.
It's possible Howard could be back in an increased role later this season, but at the very least, this is tracking well for his development for next season - just like Matt Savoie last season.
