The Edmonton Oilers will be faced with a major decision on Stuart Skinner at the end of this season when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

With the rising salary cap and added years of playoff experience, insiders believe Stuart Skinner will be asking for above $6M on his next contract - a significant raise from his current value of $2.6M that the Oilers may not be comfortable with.

Former Oilers goalie warns team against signing Stuart Skinner to long term deal

When presented with Skinner's expected salary of over $6M, even former Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk - who's a big fan and believed in Stuart Skinner - warned the team he'd just too inconsistent for an investment that size.
You're not going to give Skinner a long term extension right now with all the questions that are there. I think that has potential in the future, but right now just the way it is, Skinner is still in improvement mode.

I know it sounds craze because he's been to 2 Stanley Cup Finals in a row, but as far as the long term goalie situation in Edmonton, it's still a little bit of prove-it mode. If you were going to extend Stuart Skinner, it would be 1 or 2 years at max.

The Oilers would be trying to work their side of the inconsistencies to get a discount, but I think you'd have to be looking in the $5.5-6M range on a 1 or 2 year deal.

Simply put, the inconsistencies and swings in Stuart Skinner's game bring far too much risk to commit $6M in salary to him - let alone on a long term contract.
For the last two playoffs, Stuart Skinner has lost the net at various times. This year, 33 years old AHL journeyman had to step in for Skinner in the Cup Final. If the team thought Pickard would give them a better chance to win in the Cup Final, paying Skinner $6M makes zero sense.
The Oilers will be forced to come to a decision this year by either trading Stuart Skinner in a package for an upgrade, or letting him walk on free agency entirely. Paying $6M should not be on the table for Edmonton.
