The Edmonton Oilers biggest roster need currently is clearly goaltending, but they may be soon forced to make a big decision with Stuart Skinner in his last contract year.

Insider reports have surfaced previously that Skinner could be demanding at least $6M considering his resume and amount of playoff experience. After the signing of Ducks starter Lukas Dostal, Skinner's price has increased significantly.

Oilers insider claims Skinner salary worth will be well over $6M on next contract

According to a recent article from Oilers insider Kurt Leavins in the Edmonton Journal, Skinner's salary price will be raised after Dostal's deal because he has far more winning pedigree.
The fine young Ducks netminder inked a 5-year contract, $6.25m AAV. And that deal promises to be a but of a blueprint for Skinner.

There is not much to choose between the two on pure statistics. But Skinner is a more proven winner. Detractors may not like that assertion, but Wins and Losses matter. As a result, something above $6m seems to be in the range of what he may be able to fetch.

Frankly, this is an incredibly dishonest and lazy evaluation of goaltending. Some of Dostal's numbers are comparable to Skinner, but many more analytics point to Dostal being the far more talent goaltender.
To declare Stuart Skinner more of a «winner» is a completely vacuous statement. Of course he wins more games with the difference of team environments in Edmonton and Anaheim. If Connor Hellebuyck was on the Ducks, Skinner would probably win more games.
Skinner has been historically one of the worst playoff goalies in the NHL salary cap era, and consistently ranks below the top 30 starters in Goals Saved Above Expected - a critical goalie stat where Dostal ranked 16th.
His resume on the whole for his career may very well command a $6M salary with the rising cap in the NHL - but Skinner is not a $6M goaltender. The Oilers may be wise to trade him before they're forced to lose him for nothing, or pay through the nose for a below average goalie.
