Edmonton Oilers may hand out another 8 year contract extension to new player

The Edmonton Oilers found a diamond in the rough when they made the surprising deal for Jake Walman last season, and now they're looking to keep him around much longer.
There's already been reports that the Oilers would be interested in extending Walman and
Vasily Podkolzin, who will be free agents next season. Locking Walman up now could be smart, especially if he takes another step forward next year.
Oilers could offer 8 year contract extension to defenceman Jake Walman
If the Oilers are looking to lock up the 29 year old defenceman, they could potentially get a discount if they extend the deal to 8 years.
The most Jake Walman could get term wise next summer is 6 years. So let's do 6 by $7.5M, that's $45M.
If the Oilers went to him right now on an eight year deal and said we'll give you $45M, that's $5.6M
Jake Walman will only be able to sign a 6 year contract in free agency next season, so he has a unique opportunity to cash out with a longer term contract with the Oilers now with the extra two years to 8.
Extending the length of the contract would also bring Walman's AAV down. Having him at a price tag of only $5.6M while the cap increases greatly could become a bargain.
Walman quickly settled in as a perfect fit with the Edmonton Oilers last season, a two-way force who's reliable in his own zone and able to make slick breakout passes. An 8 year contract could be palatable for Walman if he keeps up this play.
