The Canadiens have always believed that Montembeault could be a No.1 goalie, as they proved when they signed him to a contract extension back on December 1, 2023, instead of trading him to potential suitors, like the Edmonton Oilers or Philadelphia Flyers, or the Arizona Coyotes, who all reportedly had interest in acquiring Montembeault.

Last season, Montembeault posted a .903 save percentage and started a whopping 62 games. He would've been a great fit for the Oilers, as an upgrade or tandem with Skinner.
As a 28 year old emerging goaltender from Quebec selected to Team Canada at the 4 Nations Faceoff, there seemed to be very little chance the Canadiens would move Montembeault if not for a huge trade offer.
The Oilers may have checked in, but they don't have the trade assets to acquire him. Montreal signed Montembeault to a 2 year contract extension for just $3.15M, which has proven to be a great bet on a young goalie with the rising cap.
Hopefully, the Oilers will be able to find another goalie just as good or better than Montembeault sometime before next playoffs.
