Much has been discussed of late about the Oilers' goaltending situation, and whether the current tandem of Skinner and Pickard are good enough to bring the Edmonton Oilers a Stanley Cup.
According to one Boston Bruins sports analyst, not only are they not good enough, but 'they stink'. On a recent broadcast of 98.5 The Sports Hub, the show's host suggested that if he were the Oilers' GM, he'd give pretty much anything to bring
Jeremy Swayman into the Oilers' net.

According to one Boston Bruins sports analyst, not only are they not good enough, but 'they stink'. On a recent broadcast of 98.5 The Sports Hub, the show's host suggested that if he were the Oilers' GM, he'd give pretty much anything to bring Jeremy Swayman into the Oilers' net.
I think the payroll flexibility is big for them, and I want out of that contract. So, if the Oilers are going to take on the full contract, he's yours. I don't even really care about the return.
The urgency to win a cup in Edmonton is, in fact, justified, and is felt by fans, players and management alike, so you can't blame the Boston media for saying the Oilers should give the Bruins pretty much anything they want for Swayman.
"Don't know if you can afford Swayman, but figure it out, make the deal...I don't even care about the return [to the Bruins]]" the Boston host concluded.
This is the gamble that GM Stan Bowman takes anytime he signs a new player. According the the Boston insider, the bet should have been taken back in November, when the Oilers made an attempt to land the Bruins goalie.
"The Oilers were in on Jeremy Swayman when he was holding out earlier [in the season], and it was a legit offer," the Bruins' analyst said.
"But it never really went anywhere because the Bruins stupidly were hellbent on signing the guy. Now they've [Oilers] lost their second Stanley Cup Final, and you could agree goaltending was the difference."
Comparing Swayman's stats to those of the Oilers' goalies, the difference is readily apparent. Though Swayman had a off-year in 2024-2025, his other season's numbers were well above the NHL average.
In 2023-24, Jeremey Swayman's GAA was 2.53, with a SV% of .916, while his best numbers came in 202-23, where he recorded a 2.27 GAA, and a .920 SV%. It's worthy to note that both Skinner's and Pickard's stats were below league average.
What Stan Bowman will ultimately do to stabilize the goalie position remains to be seen. Yet, the question that must be asked is, will the Oilers' GM do whatever it takes to secure a top NHL goalie to improve his team's chances of winning the Cup?
It's a gamble that should probably be taken, before the window on the Oilers closes, and the team loses more than just the Stanley Cup.
