The Pittsburgh Penguins just completed a goalie trade with the Vancouver Canucks, which may make Tristan Jarry available in trade.
The Penguins are clearly a team trending towards a long rebuild, and have just acquired young goalie
Arturs Silovs from Vancouver. He could serve as a starting goalie next year, making Jarry expendable.
NHL insider Jeff Marek links Edmonton Oilers to acquiring goalie Tristan Jarry from Pittsburgh Penguins
According to a recent report from NHL insider Jeff Marek, the Oilers could be one team checking in on Pittsburgh starter Tristan Jarry. After the trade to acquire Silovs, a Jarry move is much more likely.
The 30 year old Jarry has a moderate salary of $5.375M for the next 3 seasons. Last year was one of the worst in his career, posting a .893 save percentage in 36 games - and even being sent down to the AHL to play 12 games and improve himself.
However, last year was Jarry's only really weak season of his career. The veteran goalie has an impressive .909 career save percentage, and even as soon as last year, ranked 30th in the NHL by Goals Saved Above Expected.
Jarry could be a solid bounce-back candidate for next season, but there's significant risk to take on a $5.375M contract with term. The Penguins may need to retain salary to get a deal done with Edmonton.
Perhaps if the price isn't too costly, and the Oilers can add Jarry while subtracting very little from their roster, the team could consider a move.
However, the Oilers seem hell-bent on spending nothing on their goaltending, be it in salary or trade assets.
