Oilers upcoming contract extension could become worst deal in entire NHL

Edmonton Oilers urged to re-sign Stuart Skinner to contract extension this offseason
A deal in the $4-6 million range might seem like a slight overpay today, but it could become a bargain two years from now.
Rising cap ceilings and a shortage of reliable starters have created an environment where even average goaltenders command big dollars. Edmonton would be wise to act before it's too late.

With the quickly rising salary cap, signing a contract extension with Skinner now could certainly keep the price down in later years. If they truly believe a new goalie coach will improve his play, now may be the time to buy.
However, if the Oilers hand Stuart Skinner a $6M contract extension and he loses the starter's crease for the third time in the playoffs - it could look like one of the worst contracts in the NHL.
Right now, Stuart Skinner's experience is actually more appealing than his results as a goalie. Sure he's a young goalie that's been to the Cup Finals twice, but he's also lost the net in both playoffs - and wasn't stellar in the regular season either.
At the moment, Skinner's last 3 playoff runs rank among the worst ever by a starting goalie in the post-lockout era. Paying him $6M is a massive risk, and the Oilers would be smarter to look elsewhere for goalie help.
