Stuart Skinner was in the starter's net at practice earlier this week, potentially indicating that he may get back in the net, but the Oilers are sticking with Pickard.
Edmonton Oilers confirm Calvin Pickard as starting goalie against Vegas
According to several reporters at Oilers practice, Coach Knoblauch has confirmed Calvin Pickard will get the starting nod in net.
It's the decision that should've been obvious for the Oilers after Pickard went 4-0 in the playoffs. However, the Oilers are the only team that won their first round series without their starting goalie.
If the Oilers are going to go on a long run, Stuart Skinner may have to get back in the net. Game 1 is the lowest stakes game possible, which led some to believe that it could be the perfect opportunity to re-introduce him to the series. The only concern is that it's on the road.
Pickard's save percentage is just above Skinner's but the veteran has found ways to make the clutch final save to seal a victory when it matters. His save percentage in the third period and overtime is the key to his success.
It's tough for Stuart Skinner to lose the starter's role, as it likely changes things for his future on the team next season. Clearly, management and coaching don't trust him enough to find his game again. For now, the Oilers can only focus on winning the next game, and Pickard has been the better option.
