The Edmonton Oilers have officially signed defenceman Jake Walman to a long term contract extension.
Edmonton Oilers re-sign Jake Walman to contract extension
The Edmonton Oilers announced just after McDavid's extension that the team has also signed Jake Walman to a 7 year contract with an AAV of $7M.
It's a fantastic deal for the Oilers to lock in Walman for the next 7 years. Now 29 years old, he really emerged as an high-end two way player when arriving to the Oilers last year. He fit seamlessly on Edmonton's blue line, and now will continue to anchor the group for the next 7 years.
Analytics profilers see the contract as fair value for the Oilers currently, and with the rising salary cap, it could become even more of a bargain.
Oilers GM Stan Bowman speaks to media after McDavid and Walman contract extensions
With the 2 major pieces of business completed just days before the regular season, GM Stan Bowman spoke to media about the two deals today at Rogers Place.
On McDavid, Bowman revealed what most fans already suspected. The Oilers were willing to pay whatever necessary to keep him, but the Captain insisted on a pay cut to help the team.
On Walman, the Oilers GM spoke at length about his excellent fit with the team since the trade deadline, and how much of a future piece to the core he'll become.
With these two contracts, the Oilers have secured their place as Stanley Cup favourites for the next few seasons. Now they just need to actually deliver the trophy for the city of Edmonton.
