The Edmonton Oilers have made a number of transactions before the NHL's deadline to submit a cap-compliant roster, including some that will look surprising.
Edmonton Oilers make handful of roster moves to set NHL roster
The Edmonton Oilers have announced they've sent forward
David Tomasek and Ike Howard to the AHL, while calling up
James Hamblin. Mattias Janmark will head to the injured reserve.
As PuckPedia predicted, the Oilers would make these exact roster moves to give them the most flexibility to accrue salary cap space to begin this season.
Fans shouldn't worry about seeing the two forwards being sent down. Ike Howard and David Tomasek will be directly back with the team before Game 1 after impressing with their play in the preseason.
Next, the Oilers will likely place
Zach Hyman on LTIR, who's not expected to return until November at least.
Janmark sustained an injury late in preseason, and is expected to miss 1-2 weeks with an unspecified injury.
When both Hyman and Janmark return, the Oilers will need to make a difficult decision to cut 2 forwards - or cut one and waive Janmark. That decision won't be necessary until Hyman's return.
For now, the Oilers final opening day lineup is set, and the team is ready for another long run in the playoffs, and motivated by the fresh McDavid extension. It's now truly a cup-or-bust season, and the Oilers are ready for the challenge.
