There could be a possibility that Connor McDavid won't be the highest paid player in the NHL on his next contract.
Connor McDavid willing to take major discount on next contract extension
According to an update from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Connor McDavid will likely be coming in under $16M - less than the deal that Kaprizov just declined.
On the
32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman explained that McDavid's sole focus is winning a Stanley Cup, and he knows taking the maximum salary will impede the Oilers' ability to ice a complete roster.
Instead, McDavid is expected to take another hometown discount to help the team on his next contract - likely with a short term.
«I'll tell you something else. I don't think this number is going to be a backbreaker either, because McDavid knows he can't say, I want a championship team around me and then take a number that makes it impossible.»
- Elliotte Friedman
It would be strange to see McDavid not be the highest paid player in the NHL on a new contract, but it could make sense in context of the two deals and the rising salary cap.
If Kaprizov is signing a long-term deal where the cap is expected to be higher, he may get a higher salary than McDavid on a contract over only 2-3 years.
Most importantly for the Oilers, McDavid taking another discount to help the team is an absolute luxury from the best player in the league. They need to repay the favour by winning a Stanley Cup this season.
