Former Oilers goaltender Olivier Rodriguez's contract with the KHL team Barys Astana has been terminated.
Rodrigue signed with the KHL team this offseason after he was made a free agent when the Oilers did not extend him a qualifying offer. No other North American team proved a fit for him, and he headed overseas to continue his hockey career.
KHL team explains why former Oilers goalie Olivier Rodrigue had contract terminated
Barys Astana released a statement announcing the termination of Rodrigue, explaining that he suffered an injury in training camp and it became a mutual decision to terminate the deal.
Due to an injury sustained during training, Olivier Rodrigue underwent an in-depth medical examination, which revealed an injury requiring additional treatment. After discussions with the hockey player, a decision was made to terminate Rodrigue's current contract with Barys by mutual agreement.
The club thanks Olivier for the work he has done and wishes him success in his future career!
Rodrigue was drafted in the 2nd round in 2018 by the Edmonton Oilers, and he rose to become the organization's top goalie prospect in a weak pool last season. He appeared in 5 seasons with the Bakersfield Condors, posting a career best .916 save percentage in 2023-24.
Last season, Rodrigue was even called up to make his NHL debut with the Oilers. He appeared in 2 games late in the season, posting an .862 save percentage. Now 25 years old, he still didn't look NHL ready.
Hopefully Rodrigue will be able to recover from this injury, and find a way to get his career back on track, and potentially back to North America.
