The Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby, who is 38 years old and has played his entire 20-year career with the team that drafted him 1st overall, is now facing increased speculation about his future with the franchise after the team missed the playoffs for a third-consecutive year.
Crosby's agent, Pat Brisson, has publicly stated that 'it's always a possibility' that his client could seek a move if the Penguins continue to struggle.
This has fueled rumors linking Crosby to the Montreal Canadiens, a team he grew up cheering and one that returned to the playoffs last season, seemingly ready to become a perennial playoff team.
Despite the Penguins' struggles, however, Crosby continues to perform at an elite level. In the 2024-25 season, he scored 33G and 58A for 91 points in 80 games played, marking his third-consecutive 90-point season and maintaining a point-per-game pace throughout his 20-year career.
Over his career, Crosby has recorded 625G and 1062A (1687 points) in 1352 games, and has won three Stanley Cups. He is precisely the type of player the Habs would love to have in its lineup, not just for his obvious talent, but as a mentor to the several young stars they possess.
The Canadiens have gained significant cap flexibility after trading goaltender
Carey Price's contract recently and can make Crosby's $8.7M cap hit work.
Montreal is reported to be looking for a top second-line center behind
Nick Suzuki; Sidney Crosby most certainly qualifies for that role, on a team where its head coach Martin St. Louis seems to be nurturing its potential.
Crosby, of course, has a full no-movement-clause and would have to approve any potential trade, though Montreal would be a preferred destination for the superstar.
Crosby become a free agent July 1, 2027, when his 2-year deal with Pittsburgh expires.
