Oilers insider hints at 8 year contract for defenceman Jake Walman
«There is something that the Oilers can do, Brennan, that nobody else can do, and it maybe might relate more to a guy like Jake Wallman. But they could offer an eight-year contract extension, and we have shorter terms coming to the next CBA, which takes place next summer.
- Bob Stauffer
The NHL's new collective bargaining agreement will end 8 year contracts, which allowed teams to pay larger sums of money on shorter salaries with the extra year.
Now 29 years old and set to become a UFA, Walman could be willing to take the security of an 8 year deal. With the rising salary cap increasing player demands, getting any savings on the AAV will be meaningful.
The Oilers have already employed this strategy by signing forward
Trent Frederic to an 8 year contract.
Walman proved to be a perfect fit for the Oilers since the trade deadline. He's a strong two-way player, able to handle himself physically, defensively aware, and able to dish slick breakout passes.
Hopefully the Oilers can find a way to get Walman re-signed to keep their strong blue line intact, and if they can get him on a team-friendly contract, it's even better.
