The Edmonton Oilers have a total wild card in their free agent signing of Czech forward David Tomasek - ranging from a depth player to a diamond in the rough.
The Oilers signing of
Tomasek went a bit under the radar during the NHL playoffs. After leading the SHL in scoring last season at the age of 29, Tomasek is making the jump to North America in the fall.
Oilers analysts reveal realistic expectations for free agent David Tomasek
Tomasek scored an impressive 57 points in 47 SHL games last season. Looking at his NHLe which projects scoring based on production in other leagues, Tomasek would project to score a whopping 59 points next season.
Of course, scoring 59 points seems unrealistic for a player that will have to battle to even make the lineup this year. As the Oilers currently project to line up, Tomasek is on the outside looking in.
However,
Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch has revealed that he envisions Tomasek cracking the opening night lineup. From the GM's point of view too, they wouldn't sign him to an NHL contract if they wouldn't give him a chance.
Tomasek is a good bet by the Oilers. If he makes it, he will play in the bottom six on the wing most likely. Perhaps he can chip in on face-offs as a right shot. He will probably see a little time on the second powerplay given his skills.
Whether he can be enough of a contributor in ten to twelve minutes per night in a league where the ice surface will challenge his skating is the question.

At the end of the day, this signing is a no-risk and high-reward move for the Oilers. If Tomasek doesn't work out, he has an out-clause in his contract to return to Europe.
If he can contribute at all in any role, even a 4th line right shot center, it'll be a diamond in the rough addition.
