38 year old forward Derek Ryan appears to be officially planning for his retirement as the Edmonton Oilers continue their playoff run.

This announcement was expected from the veteran Ryan after he was sent down to the AHL early this season. Assuming he doesn't get back into the playoffs, his final NHL game was on April 13th vs the Winnipeg Jets.

Veteran Oilers forward Derek Ryan announces his retirement with family

Derek's wife Bonnie Ryan stated on Instagram today that the couple intends on selling their house in Edmonton, and moving back to his hometown of Spokane, Washington.
We are going to be selling our home here in Edmonton soon. Listing July 1.

As you can imagine, this is a very bittersweet announcement. Our plan is to move back to Spokane full time once the season and school year ends. Unless an amazing opportunity presents itself. Time for the start of a new adventure for our family.

It's a little surprising to see Ryan not formally announce his retirement, and to make these plans final during the playoffs.
The Ryan's seemed to leave the door open with another «amazing opportunity», which could mean another player contract or perhaps a different role in hockey. There has been speculation Ryan could become a coach or a scout, and the Oilers would be top of the list to hire him.

Derek Ryan had an unlikely and incredible NHL career

If this is in fact the end of Ryan's playing career, it will be one he can look back on with immense pride.
Ryan made his NHL debut in his age 30 season with the Hurricanes after grinding overseas to earn a contract. Not many players make the NHL at his age, and even fewer went on to play over 600 games. He never lit up the score sheet, but his attention to detail, leadership, and work ethic always made him a worthy player.
All the best to Derek Ryan and his family in their next chapter of life, whether it's in hockey or not.
