According to multiple reports, NHL Player Safety has decided not to impose any supplemental discipline on Darnell Nurse for his slash against Roope Hintz in the Oilers and Stars series.
NHL Player Safety will not fine or suspend Darnell Nurse for slash on Roope Hintz
Multiple sources have now confirmed that Nurse will not be fined or suspended for the slash on Hintz, despite protests from
the Dallas Stars.
Honestly, it is a questionable decision from
NHL Player Safety. It was a direct and forceful slash from Nurse that caused an injury to another player, yet only received a two minute minor.
Fining Nurse would've been an appropriate punishment and would somewhat deter more plays like this. A 2 minute minor penalty simply isn't enough when it can knock out a star player with injury.
Oilers fans have been on the other end of this, with Pietrangelo's slash on Draisaitl and Giordano against McDavid. Really, the NHL has been absurd with punishments for slashing plays. This slash against
Trent Frederic only earned a fine.
If Roope Hintz misses any time through the playoffs with an injury, it will be a major loss for the Dallas Stars. The Finnish forward is key to their offensive success, with 11 points in 15 games.
The NHL needs to get far more consistent with their rulings for offences, and perhaps even get a little more harsh for punishments. By their standard, Darnell Nurse didn't deserve to be fined - but maybe he should have.
