The Edmonton Oilers are looking to aggressively upgrade their team in pursuit of the Stanley Cup this offseason, and may end up as patterns with the Penguins for a trade.
The Penguins seem to be open for business, finally directing themselves to a rebuild after missing the playoffs for years. Goaltender
Tristan Jarry is reportedly available and has been linked to the Oilers, and Erik Karlssson is also on the block.
Trade proposal swapping $27M in salary emerges between Penguins and Oilers
Working off the framework of Karlsson and Jarry being available, analyst at OilersNation put together a trade proposal that would send both players to Edmonton - in exchange for
Darnell Nurse and Mattias Janmark. The trade would be a massive one, swapping over $27M in salary between the teams.
On the Oilers end, this would work to acquire an elite offensive defenceman for the playoffs, and a new starting goalie to address their weakness in net.
It's very debatable how much either player would help the Oilers, either. Jarry found himself in the AHL last season due to poor play, and
Erik Karlsson is famously unreliable in his own zone.
And of course on the Penguins end - why one earth would they make this trade? If Pittsburgh is letting go of two of their top veteran assets, they're looking for young pieces to rebuild their roster. Darnell Nurse's overpaid contract and 4th liner Mattias Janmark don't achieve those goals at all.
If the Oilers are making a major trade this season, it absolutely should be for a goaltender. Adding another defenceman, especially one like Erik Karlsson for a depth role, should be last on the Oilers list of priorities.
