The Edmonton Oilers biggest priority this offseason will be re-signing Connor McDavid to a new contract extension, but there's a few reasons talks may be delayed.
Multiple personal events may delay Oilers contract talks with Connor McDavid
McDavid himself is going to be busy this offseason, and frankly may not have the time yet to dial in for contract negotiations.
It's been just over 1 month since the Oilers played their last game, and it's fair to allow some vacation time to unwind afterwards. McDavid's returned home to play beer league games in Newmarket, and also will be attending his brother's wedding this weekend.
Not only that, but in just a few weeks McDavid and plenty more Oilers will be travelling to France to attend
Leon Draisaitl's wedding.
Finally, just before training camp opens, Connor McDavid will be playing a large part in hosting the Great Assist Golf Tournament for the Ben Stelter Foundation in Alberta. McDavid has invited several Team Canada teammates, potentially also as a pre-Olympics bonding event.
On the whole, McDavid's summer is packed with some significant personal events. There may not be much of a time window for him to meet with the front office and engage in contract talks until the beginning of training camp.
That shouldn't worry Oilers fans though, as Draisaitl also signed his contract extension in September of last year.
Regardless of whether or not he's willing to negotiate this summer, the Oilers will be waiting to hand McDavid a blank cheque whenever he's ready to re-sign in Edmonton.
