New reports suggest the Ottawa Senators will make a bid to host the NHL's next World Cup of Hockey, going up against the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Montreal Canadiens.
Ottawa could be making the bid to put a stamp on their franchise under competitive new ownership, but frankly, their arena facilities don't match up to the rest of the field - especially the Oilers and Flames.
Edmonton Oilers among teams interested in hosting 2028 World Cup of Hockey
According to a recent report from Sens insider Bruce Garrioch, Ottawa is beginning to make their play official to host in 2028. The bidding process is expected to begin fairly soon.
The Senators don't seem like a prime destination for such a premier event of the entire hockey world. No disrespect to the city of Ottawa, but their outdated arena on the outskirts of the actual city hasn't worked so well with fans.
On the other hand, the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames will both have state of the art facilities in 2028. Edmonton's Rogers Place is among the class of the NHL for arenas, and the Flames new arena replacing the SaddleDome is expected to be finished before 2028.
According to previous reports from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Oilers and Flames are also among the main interested parties.
As for North America, the hockey meccas of Toronto and Montréal stand out. However, there has been buzz recently about a New York / New Jersey bid, support in Minnesota and Chicago, as well as a potential Edmonton / Calgary play, with the Flames' new Scotia Place slated to open in Oct. 2027.

The NHL may very well go back to their historic homes in Toronto and Montreal, but a venture out west to tue rabid hockey scene there with state of the art facilities is an enticing option.
Hockey fans in Edmonton and Calgary would absolutely go nuts for the chance to see a proper Team Canada game. There's challenges with time zones and travel, but there's plenty of reasons for the NHL to head West for their next major event.
