Debate raised on NHL changing award name to honour Alexander Ovechkin

Hockey fans around the world witnessed history earlier today when Ovechkin managed to break former Oilers legend Wayne Gretzky's all time scoring record which now stands at 895 goals.

Many fans are split on the idea of changing the name of this prestigious award as one side of the argument states that preserving the names of the past and avoiding change should be the norm going for all NHL awards.

Where the other side feels that players like Ovechkin, who has won the Rocket Richard trophy nine times in his career and is the best goal scorer in NHL history should be recognized on the trophy, where Richard himself had only been the best goal scorer five times in his career.

Other fans have weighed in and feel that new trophies should be introduced into the NHL including best defensive and offensive defenseman rather than just the Norris trophy which represents all defensemen.

Wayne Gretzky told Ovechkin long before the record was broken that he would be the first one to shake his hand after he had done it and Gretzky honored that moment as a quick ceremony was put in place in the middle of an NHL game.

The sight of seeing New York Islanders fans who were the home team going completely fanatical and cheering for Ovechkin was a great sight to see along with his teammates.

This moment was great for the game, the NHL and this generation of fans as they were able to witness a once thought unbreakable record be broken within 31 years as Gretzky's record was set on March 23rd 1994 when he played for the Los Angeles Kings.
