Alexander Ovechkin has made hockey history in the biggest way possible. The Capitals forward has tied Wayne Gretzky's NHL career goal record of 894.
It's been an incredible saga to track the 39 year old Ovechkin all season as he seemed to elevate his game in pursuit of the record. Wayne Gretzky has been travelling with him, and has been supportive all season.

Ovechkin scored his second goal of the game tonight to make history on home ice against the Chicago Blackhawks. It was an absolutely incredible moment, and the building popped off in response.
It was an incredible scene as the game stopped to hold a ceremony to honour Ovechkin's achievement.
Wayne Gretzky himself was in the building as well to take in the moment, and officially pass the torch to Ovechkin as the best goal scorer ever.
Not only that, but Ovechkin's goal was a clutch goal to put the Capitals one ahead of the Blackhawks in the game. All season the Capltals have vastly outperformed everyone's expectations, and he of course has been a major part of their success. Ovechkin has done an incredible job leading a young group of players himself.
The Capitals forward now sits with 894 career goals, and will now surely pass Gretzky record by far and set a new goalie record. Every single goal Ovechkin scores from now on will be a historic moment.
Incredibly, Ovechkin was able to tie Gretzky's goal record in exactly one less game played. It goes to show that this record from Ovechkin is now fluke - he truly is an incredible marvel of talent.
