Much has been made about William Nylander and his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs since the day he was drafted back in 2014. The 27-year-old winger was drafted in the first round, 8th overall, and was touted as a pure goal scorer and point-getter for the Maple Leafs.

Throughout his time, his raw talent and improving quality continued to shine through as coaches came and went. Some of the Maple Leafs fan base, however, has always been tough on Nylander because he was notorious for defensive lapses and careless plays in his end of the rink.

It appears those days are over as Nylander has been taking his game extremely seriously and has levelled up as he approaches his contract extension negotiations, which is bad news for the Maple Leafs with their current cap space of $0, on the dot.

Many in Leafs Nation hoped he would be signed before the season began, but Nylander himself felt there was no need to hurry that along as he now shows his value has gone up.

Nylander scored two more goals tonight against the Calgary Flames, and he has now joined Connor McDavid as the only active player with a season-opening point streak, which stands at 14 games. McDavid, making $12.5M on his current deal has 10 points on the season, Nylander on the other hand has an astonishing 21.

When Nylander's payday is up, he will expect numbers such as McDavid's making as he is surpassing him in every category.

As his playoff prowess and offensive skills continue to improve and impress, it's expected that he will be commanding a salary of $10 million per season or higher, and he is currently looking for an 8-year extension with the Maple Leafs.

It remains to be seen whether Brad Treliving can get a deal done before next offseason, but many in Leaf Nation hope it's possible.
