The Edmonton Oilers powerplay is always one of their keys to success when the team is clicking, and to begin this year's playoffs, Zach Hyman was off the top unit at times for Corey Perry.
Zach Hyman had a down season this year with only 27 goals and 44 points in 73 games - a significant drop from his incredible 54 goal season last year.
Oilers coach switches out Corey Perry for Zach Hyman on powerplay at times
The Edmonton Oilers subtly changed out Zach Hyman for Corey Perry on the first power play unit a few times in Game 1.
Perry was seen previously at practice taking regular reps on the powerplay, without Hyman on either unit. However, Hyman still did see powerplay time in Game 1.
Corey Perry deserves the promotion for his quality play, and eating into Hyman's ice time may be the best method to play Perry more.
Perry had a great impact on last night's game, scoring a goal, an assist, and a +4 rating in 15:10 of ice time. Hyman played over just 2 minutes more than Perry.
On the other hand, Hyman has had a disappointing season after his career year last year. The Oilers have the room to elevate other players.
At 39 years old, nobody expected 19 goal season from Corey Perry. The veteran has shown an incredible ability to remain productive as his speed declines, leaning on his ability to read plays and still his inherent scoring ability. After all, Corey Perry is a Hart Trophy and Rocket Richard winner. His season has been incredible to watch.
