The Edmonton Oilers are facing some significant doubt from the outside before this year's playoffs, but legend Wayne Gretzky is sticking by his original squad over Los Angeles.
Most NHL analysts have the Kings as a slight favourite in this year's series, but that's not enough for Wayne to count out McDavid and Draisaitl.
Wayne Gretzky sticks behind Edmonton Oilers to reach Cup Final once again
On last night's broadcast of the NHL on TNT broadcast, three different analysts swapped the Oilers out of their pre-season Cup Final predictions. However, Wayne Gretzky is still sticking behind the Oilers to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning to win it all.
PAUL BISSONETTE: I want Wayne to sell me on the Oilers. Why should I stick with that pick?
WAYNE GRETZKY: Let me think, 97. How hard was that?
I'm off the Leaf bandwagon. I just think Tampa Bay has a better team right now. I think going in they're under less pressure, less of a microscope than Toronto. I got Edmonton and Tampa Bay in the final.
It's great to see Gretzky sticking by his original team and his original allegiance in the NHL, especially over another former team in the Los Angeles Kings.
The Oilers will be in for a tough series against an improved LA team, but as Gretzky says, Connor McDavid is a talent that can single handedly take a team back to a Cup Final. The rest of the Oilers cast is no slouch either.
Hopefully Gretzky's prediction comes true this season, and the Oilers are finally able to capture their first Stanley Cup in the McDavid era.
