The Edmonton Oilers will be facing key decisions when it comes to contracts this offseason and Mattias Janmark maybe on the chopping block despite having two more years remaining.
Janmark has not provided the offense that is needed for his $1.45 million per year, which has led some to speculate that the Oilers would likely move off of his contract through trade or a potential buyout.
Oilers youth making waves that could push out Janmark
The Oilers depth within the organization including the Bakersfield condors have several players who would make fine replacements for Janmark.
Players like Noah Philip,
Matthew Savoie along with
Quinn Hutson and
David Tomasek could all find themselves Joe sting for a job next training camp and would likely provide more offense than Janmark has done at two goals scored.
This season has been a decline in his numbers as he has played 80 games, scoring two goals with 16 assists for 18 points and is a - 6 and has played 13 minutes and 18 seconds of average ice time.
Even players like
Corey Perry who is 39 years old has had far better production and similar ice time could also threaten Janmark's position on the team.
Oilers salary cap issues will continue with major decisions coming
The next two seasons for the Oilers will be a juggling act as the team looks to free up some cap space as they attempt to sign defenseman
Evan Bouchard to a long-term deal along with team captain
Connor McDavid who will be an unrestricted free agent after next season.
In the process, to accommodate these contracts and other deals that are needed players like Janmark could be put into a trade to help give other teams players who could help them get to the cap floor as the salary cap is set to skyrocket over the next three seasons.
The Oilers will also have other decisions including signing Connor brown, Corey Perry,
Trent Frederic and
Jeff Skinner if the team wishes to retain all these players.
The Oilers are set to open the NHL playoffs on Monday April 21st as they will be on the road to take on the Los Angeles Kings.
If healthy, the Oilers could have another deep run into the playoffs and potentially into the Stanley Cup finals for a second year in a row.
The Oilers will continue to evaluate their roster and more decisions will come in the off season.
