According to a recent social media posting, former-Oiler and current legend Wayne Gretzky has signed a multi-year extension with NHL on TNT.
«TNT Sports has agreed to a multiyear contract renewal with @WayneGretzky,» the TNT Sports U.S. PR account wrote on X. «Catch him on @NHL_On_TNT opening night this Wednesday, Oct. 8, with coverage starting at 6 p.m. ET.»
Hockey legend raises credibility of game-coverage in the US
TNT is at the midpoint of its own multiyear media rights contract with the NHL; extending The Great One ensures that Gretzky's analysis remains a focal point of its coverage at key events like the NHL's Winter Classic and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Wayne Gretzky is considered by most hockey fans to be the greatest in NHL history. He has considerably raised the authority of TNT's NHL coverage ever since he became a studio analyst in 2021
According to Athlon Sports, Gretzky's arrival has brought an instant boost in credibility and visibility to Turner's broadcasts.
Gretzky's extension signed days before McDavid's
It seems that Gretzky has brought also good luck to Oilers Nation, as his extension preceded the current Captain
Connor McDavid's own extension, who will now remain with the Oilers for an additional two years, and three years before he becomes a UFA.
Connor McDavid has helped the Oilers to consecutive Stanley Cup Finals, scoring 8 goals and 42 points in 2023-24 and seven goals and 33 points in 22 games.
His 42 points make him the third player to score more than 40 in a single postseason, joining Gretzky and Lemieux, though he hope to join the two legends by raising the Cup himself.
The 2025-26 NHL season will start on Tuesday, with three games on ESPN before NHL on TNT takes over with a doubleheader on Wednesday with Gretzky leading the coverage.
