The Edmonton Oilers eliminated the Vegas Golden Knights in only 5 games, and now Coach Bruce Cassidy is simply admitting that Edmonton shut them down entirely.
The Oilers depth players shined through the entire second round, with meaningful contributions from the entire lineup - and their commitment to team defence.
Vegas coach admits Edmonton Oilers shut down offensive players with quality defence
Speaking to the media yesterday, Vegas players mostly attributed the series loss to bounces and lacking the execution on offence. Today, Bruce Cassidy took it a step further, and credited the Oilers defence.
Cassidy instead said the team needs to re-evaluate how they generate offence, and how the Oilers were able to shut them down. Being shut out for the final 120 minutes isn't a recipe for success.
While
Stuart Skinner was perfect and shut the door to any chances against, the Oilers also played near perfect team defence to a man. Every player, including forwards, are aware of their position on the ice and executed their coverage to a tee.
That's credit to the Oilers players, and the coaching staff. At the same time, Cassidy reiterated his belief in his Golden Knights to come back better.
The Edmonton Oilers have always had a reputation for high octane offence, but they're creating a new identity of team defence up and down the lineup. Even
Connor McDavid has passionately defended his defence and that of his teammates.
If their quality defensive play continues along with their offence firing at all cylinders, the Oilers will be an unstoppable force on their way to the Stanley Cup.
