The Edmonton Oilers have a logjam of defenceman that could force a trade, but they also may want to bring another player up from the AHL.
Insiders have been hinting towards an incoming trade for the Oilers to clear a spot on defence, as the team is currently carrying 8 blueliners.
Alec Regula has appeared to won the job for the 6th spot, leaving
Ty Emberson and
Troy Stecher out.
Edmonton Oilers may look to call up another defenceman from AHL
Top NHL insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed recently that the Oilers could be moving out one defenceman in the near future - but also suggested that the team is high on another defenceman in the minors.
Edmonton also has a lot of blueliners, including some they like at AHL Bakersfield. That's another team that could move one at some point.

Ty Emberson could be the most likely player to go as the most expensive player with a $1.3M contract, while Stecher can serve as the 7th defender at $788K.
It's not likely the Oilers would move out a defenceman just to call up another and carry 8 defenders on their NHL roster - but it's interesting to hear they're closely watching another AHL player.
The Oilers have 2 defenders in the AHL who have NHL experience and could earn a call-up.
Josh Brown is an option as a big physical defenceman, but struggles mightily with practically everything else. Cam Dineen is a 27-year old who's played 38 NHL games and hundreds in the minors. He may earn a look.
There's a number of other defenceman prospects who are currently farther away from the NHL, including
Atro Leppanen, Damien Carfagna, and
Beau Akey.
When Regula cleared to return to play from his injury, the Oilers could be quickly making another roster move.
