Top NHL insider Frank Seravalli has revealed Oilers superstar Connor McDavid may hold out until next June to make a decision on his next contract.
As their team Captain and best player in the NHL, walking McDavid to UFA status where they could lose him for nothing is the worst case scenario. Insiders are still confident a deal gets done, but an unsigned McDavid after next year's playoffs would be a major worry for the Oilers organization.
Top NHL insider says Connor McDavid may not sign contract extension until next June
According to Seravalli, the next two weeks before opening night will be critical to the negotiations between McDavid and the Oilers. If they reach the season opener, McDavid may not negotiate through the year.
The Oilers won't want to allow McDavid to get so close to hearing offers from other teams, so getting a contract done in the next few weeks needs to be the priority from the front office. It surely is, but McDavid holds all the cards.
The supposed reason for McDavid's contract holdup is a doubt on the team's ability to compete for a Stanley Cup beyond this season. He may want to see how the team fares early on this year, but a few weeks wouldn't gleam much information on their Cup window for the future.
With the regular season now just over 2 weeks away, it's worrying to hear it's even a possibility McDavid reaches the open market. Hopefully a deal is done as soon as possible.
