The Edmonton Oilers' biggest priority this offseason will be re-signing Connor McDavid, and the captain may make it easier on his team.

With the rapidly rising salary cap, there's reason for Connor McDavid to demand the maximum salary - but that would make it harder for the Oilers to ice the best roster possible.

Connor McDavid likely to give Edmonton Oilers another major discount on next contract

On the most recent episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that Connor McDavid's salary on his next contract may be shockingly low - maybe not even the highest paid player in the NHL.
«I believe, I really believe more than ever, and I've said it a couple of times, but I've, I really believe it more than ever. If McDavid signs in Edmonton, if he does, it's going to be for a lower number than we all expect.

Like, I think it's going to surprise people where it could end up.»

- Elliotte Friedman
Friedman went on to explain that McDavid knows taking the highest possible salary will hurt the Oilers' chances of icing the best possible roster and winning the Stanley Cup. Not only that, but on a short-term contract, his salary would be lower relative to the rapidly rising cap.
If McDavid signs a short term contract as expected, Friedman noted that the salary could even be below $16M.
«Let's say, Conor McDavid just signed three times 15.5. Do you think Minnesota goes back to Kaprizov's down?»

- Elliotte Friedman

Even though it won't be a long term contract, getting the best player in the NHL on a major discount will be a huge advantage for the Oilers moving forward.
