According to new reports from TSN Insider Ryan Rishaug, Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney will be joining the Edmonton Oilers on the ice at practice before facing the Winnipeg Jets.

The Oilers are currently dealing with injuries to multiple star players including Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, and Mattias Ekholm - maybe they really needed an extra body on the ice.

Carney will actually get on the ice with his hometown team, the Edmonton Oilers. The Prime Minister was born in the Northwest Territories, but was raised in Edmonton as an Oilers fan.
The Prime Minister skated around the ice in a number 24 jersey with his name on the back, just shooting pucks into the net as the Oilers warmed up. Honestly, his shot looked pretty weak.
Oilers insider Bob Stauffer recently brought up a hilarious image of the Prime Minister in a custom Connor McDavid t-shirt. You have to be a pretty hardcore fan to wear a piece of merch like this.
The Prime Minister has also been spotted in the past rocking Oilers jerseys and supporting the team.
Growing up in Edmonton, Carney played goalie and eventually went on to play with Harvard University's NCAA team in the 1984-85 season.
Unfortunately there's no goalie stats recorded from that era, so it's impossible to tell how good he was in net. Still, with the Oilers struggles in net, plenty of fans are joking that he could tryout for the team.
Carney was even spotted speaking to the Oilers' goalie coach Dustin Schwartz.

Edmonton Oilers gear up to face Winnipeg Jets with heavily depleted lineup

It's really just a gimmick that the Oilers can have a moment with the new Prime Minister, especially while they're gearing up to play a top team in the Winnipeg Jets with multiple star players dealing with injury.
Hopefully it doesn't become too much of a distraction at practice, but it's not too likely the Oilers players are swayed by a publicity event at practice. The Oilers will be entirely focused on their goal of winning tonight, no matter who is in the lineup.
