Oilers may have to sign forward to short term contract to afford the deal

During a recent episode of the Oilers Nation Everyday podcast, host Liam Horrobin along with the rest of the panel discussed for potential re signing of Trent Frederic as he recovers from a high ankle sprain.
The panel explained that the Oilers are patiently waiting to see what kind of a player Frederic will be for their organization as he has yet to play since his injury and the trade that sent him from Boston Bruins.
Oilers may need to sign Frederic to a short-term deal
It was suggested that the Oilers may consider signing him to a short-term deal at the rate he is looking for as other teams will attempt to sign him as he is a unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.
Some pundits have suggested that he would be looking for a deal that would fetch him $4 million per year and his current deal which is set to expire is a $2.3 million cap yet but 50% has been retained by the Bruins through the trade along with 25%

He has played 57 games this season, scoring 8 goals with 7 assists for 15 points and is a - 14 along with 44 penalty minutes. This year has been a dramatic drop off considering he had 40 points through 82 games last year and was a + 9.
Good news on the horizon for Oilers and Frederic
Over the past couple of days, Frederic has been skating alongside Connor McDavid and Evander Kane during their recent practice.
According to Head Coach Kris Knoblauch, there's a possibility that Frederic will play for the Oilers by Monday against Anaheim as the team continues it's road trip.
The Oilers have been suffering from a rash of injuries over the past week to two weeks and as they're walking wounded comes back, it will give the coaching staff a chance to see what their playoff lines could look like and give players like Frederic a chance to play with his new team.
The Oilers three-game road trip will see them suit up against the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings and the Ducks.
