The Edmonton Oilers made a trade deadline deal to acquire Trent Frederic, and heading into the playoffs, he's only played 7:10 of ice time.

Frederic may be able to be available in Game 1 of the playoffs, but already, fans and the organization aren't thrilled with how his injury has turned out.
In his one opportunity to get on the ice, Frederic seemed to get injured on his first shift, and hasn't played since.

Oilers insider believes there may be some difficulty in signing Trent Frederic.

According to Oilers analyst Allan Mitchell, there may be some serious pushback to signing Frederic due to his expected raise and injury concerns. The fanbase already isn't thrilled, and the organization can't be either.
Fans are upset at the price paid for a veteran who has yet to contribute. He's also in his walk year and there are no indications that the player would thrive in the Edmonton environment.

Should Bowman sign Frederic, is there any indication that he would stay healthy and perform at a productive level?

So far, there isn't anything meaningful to judge Frederic's fit with the team - so committing with a large contract could be risky.
This upcoming playoffs then will be a pivotal moment for Frederic himself. If he can get into the lineup and begin contributing, he'll earn more faith from the Oilers for a contract extension - but also from the rest of the NHL.
Oilers insider Jason Gregor believes Frederic's next contract could be between $3.5-4.5M. Even if the Oilers offer less in salary, Frederic may see Edmonton as the best place to help his career.
Some team may be willing to pay me $4M. And Edmonton's only gonna pay 3.5. But if I play 3 years in Edmonton, and I'll have an opportunity to play with Draisaitl and McDavid if I play well, I'm not getting that opportunity [elsewhere].

- Jason Gregor
The Oilers will certainly have a need for Trent Frederic on the wing next season. Hopefully he can play well throughout this playoff run, and the Oilers can find a way to get him locked up on a new deal.
