The Edmonton Oilers will soon need to make a number of roster moves to get under the salary cap, but they may not have to trade anyone.

As players like Zach Hyman and Matthias Janmark return from injury, reports surfaced that the Oilers may be considering a trade to clear the necessary salary cap and roster spots. However, they may not have to lose anyone.

Oilers insider reveals team can become cap compliant without trades

According to a new report from Oilers insider Jason Gregor, the most likely path forward may be re-assigning Ike Howard, David Tomasek, and Troy Stecher to the AHL. Only Stecher will be eligible for waivers.
The Oilers could hope that Stecher clears waivers, and can remain in the organization as defensive depth. However, they also may be doing right by the player to find himself a new NHL opportunity elsewhere.
Sending down David Tomasek to the AHL also might prove to be an issue. He's a 29 year old European Free Agent signing who looked fine in the NHL, but just hasn't found a role in the Oilers lineup. The Oilers may be open to trading him, or he could leave to head back to Europe - but it's not likely he'd happily play in the AHL.
Sending down Curtis Lazar may be the easiest choice for the Oilers, but he does own a cheap $775K contract. Mattias Janmark could be another option with his $1.45M deal, but he's a trusted veteran on the team.
According to PuckPedia, the Oilers will need to clear just under $2.8M from their roster for Hyman's return. Some interesting roster decisions will be finalized in the coming days.
