The Edmonton Oilers have made the decision to send defensive prospect Beau Akey down from the AHL to the ECHL.
Akey's being sent down after not appearing in one game for the Bakersfield Condors. Previously considered one of the team's top defensive prospects, this isn't a good start to his professional career.
Edmonton Oilers send down top defensive prospect Beau Akey to the bottom level
The Bakersfield Condors announced the roster move this afternoon. Akey will move to the Oilers' ECHL affiliate, the Fort Wayne Komets.
According to Condors reporters, Akey has been deemed healthy from any potential injuries but just hasn't been able to crack the Condors' lineup.
The Oilers have a number of free agent signings with potential playing in Bakerfield, and Akey couldn't beat any of them for a spot.
Drafted by the Oilers in the second round of 2023, Akey sustained a major shoulder injury in the following season - and it may have been a detriment to his development as a prospect.
Even when he returned to the OHL, he didn't have the same level as before the injury.
Prior to his setback due to injury, Akey was considered to be one of the Oilers top prospects, and one that they could offer in a trade.
With the current trajectory of his career, it's not likely the Oilers would get much in return for him now.
Hopefully Akey can build up some confidence in the ECHL, and find a way to grow his game and get back on track on a path to the NHL once again.
